Photo Wednesday 07/13/11 : The Most Famous man on the Brooklyn IRT

I think I just figured a solution to the summer Photo Wednesday dilemma, which is too many things going on to only have one photo for wednesday. The solution is I'll try loading all the week's contenders from flickr (much faster than coding) and then list them up to number one.

Today's number one is this brother who's name I don't know, and who I've never spoken with, but I've heard his voice. And if you read the IRT in Brooklyn (yes I'm trying to keep the IRT name alive) then you've probably heard his voice too. he has what at first looks like a walkman, or discman. You'll notice that almost last though. What you'll notice first is a sharp crackly crash of sound wrapped around a distorted voice, doing what is either Dance Hall chanting, Kareoke Vocoder, or CB Radio mimicing.

This brother replete in a single ensemble then begins the magic, a full on performance, featuring energy, music, and interpretive dance. What his intentions are can not be known for sure, but he's not shy that's for certain.

I first noticed him two years ago, shortly after Michael Jackson's death. This brother was doing abbrevatated moonwalks at Atlantic Avenue. Where interestingly, is where the above photo was snapped.

This time out I caught a picture and noticed that everyone around watching him seemed to have a story about him already.

He doesn't need twitter, he's trending in the real.

PhotoWed 10/20/10 : An Unlikely pair Edition

I'm referring in the title to the tube socks of course, well no, not really.

Granted, the gent in the photo, complete as he is in camouflage, beret and that aforementioned pair of white tube socks is an unlikely somebody to be (of all things) holding up the wall on Prospect Place, but as I watched him hold it down, or keep it up (whichever you prefer) he was joined by a woman who seemed not to know him, and also seemed to be very much the prototypical Brooklyn Sunday church lady.

And there they are.

Photo Wednesday 03/10/10 : Meeting the Deadline Edition

Downtown Brooklyn Bavaria? 1

Funny thing about life, time and our perceptions of it all. I think it's funny that we interact with deadlines. That we judge ourselves by our stage of completion in approximation to deadlines becomes absurd in the face of the finality of most human endeavors. Are we trying to demonstrate foresight? Are we priming ourselves to be the pinnacle of human punctuality? Are we covering our ass? Maybe it's a combination of all.

We even make artificial deadlines, which is a little like buying presents for ourselves and pretending Santa did it, then dressing as Santa while having a congratulatory cookie snack, which we left for ourselves and finally avoiding mirrored surfaces, less the whole farce shatter.

I'm suddenly surrounded by deadlines. When I worked in publishing my favorite work-phrase was "dropdead" which was the penultimate deadline. Implying if work were not complete by that time the Apocalypse would ensue thereby making arguments about fonts, serifs and leading all woefully moot.

These days my favorite work phrase is "frame fucking".

Life is motion, rather than look at a time coming why is it so hard to visualize the time that's always passing?

Downtown Brooklyn Bavaria? 1
The photo above comes from a building I never fail to forget exists. It's tucked into the beginning or end of Nevins street. I would love to know Nevin's history but I don't save for the fact that the Fox Studios theater was here in the 30's

The building has that kind of Bavarian exterior you can find in Crown Heights, Astoria and Forest Hills in Queens. I wonder if the building is on borrowed time.

Just found the blog of the self proclaimed Jello-Mold Queen of Brooklyn. I think he and her concoctions are awesome, long live the Queen!

Droolers Delight: NYC Cream

Just saw this article in the NY Times wherein an intrepid reporter, friends in tow, traverses the city in search of tasty ice cream treats.

I couldn't get past the third paragraph and photos before drool deluge began. Watch out for Buzz Buzzard and good luck, I'm off to buy some creamy.

Photo Wedns: 09/03/09: Sensing a Parade, the Dragon strayed

Urban Chinese Dragon bones

I'm not familiar with a Chinese cultural parade through Crown Heights, so I assume this mythical creature got lost. Or maybe it's just early for next week when the West Indian Day Parade/Carnival marches down Eastern Parkway, just a block away from where this photo was taken.

WTF! Free.Bouncy.Rides. ?!?

How in the fuck did I not know about this:

It's been going on at least since March, apparently everywhere.

So what I want to know is, is that Paco Cao under the hood? And why are some many women I dated in the last few months, on that fish's lap?

Law and Order grows a fly on the wall in Brooklyn

I watched Law & Order, the "SUV" edition of NBC's long running multi-generational cop ensemble and they did Williamsburg tonight.

Sooo silly. A caricature only slightly more ridiculous than the real thing. Fave quote,"sometimes I think I should move back to Wisconsin"

That and the debut of Jeff Goldblum as a potentially new-agey genius cop character.
It's a guilty pleasure that answers my question of why these shows are still on. No clip, they don't need my pr.

The investigative drama even managed in the recent bedbug epidemic, must felt (complained about?) by hipsters, in the episode bedbugs become a DNA bank as a lab tech says "we can extract the blood they ate for up to two months". eww.
