Photo Wednesday 020514 : Bridge to SnowWhere Edition

And the snow goes on...

This Photo for Wednesday obviously comes from this week's snow storms. Love this pic, I was on my way to an errand when I decided to hop off the subway and take the bridge. Stinging snow, obscured city, frames hands, icy camera. Good times! It got so dark the lights came on, it's actually about 12:35pm in this pic.

Click through and you'll see the other one I like of the mail-carrier living up to that mythic poem.

In addition to the new snow falling today, supposedly more snow's on the way this weekend. I blame the groundhog for being mad that the Mayor dropped him. Stay safe.

Photo Wed 012914: Lonely Soldier on Schermerhorn Edition

With scheduled construction of a hotel to the left of it (from this angle) and the largest tower in Brooklyn slated to go up to it's right, this lonely little building is at more than a few interesting intersections on Schermerhorn Street at Downtown's edge.

In Downtown Brooklyn, Schermerhorn Street is a heat sink, to borrow and adjust the term for a computer part who's principal purpose is to suck all the heat to one location. In computers this is useful because heat sinks sit on or next to fans and vents, that allow the heat to be dispersed. Lonely Livingston Avenue, sitting parallel between the active avenues of Fulton Street and Atlantic hadn't been as useful for decades.

In my life time of several decades it's been home to city offices, like the Board of Education (now moved to midtown in an effort to reign in their ranks) and state service offices like medicaid, unemployment and the bureau of child welfare. Other than that, the back side of a municipal parking garage, occasionally wafting with the fragrance of urine, a small sadly neglected city park, and a few other odds and ends were all I could tell you about Schermerhorn  until about ten years ago when the condo boom erupted in downtown Brooklyn. Since then there are a few tony developments. For example the "Be@Schermerhorn" is complete with an anchor retail tent in the style of a whole-foods-esque, which made me laugh because I remember when a hotdog and a person in need of medical attention was much of what you could reliably find on Schermerhorn, and those days weren't long gone when that particular condo and market went up. Which could account for some of the issues they had filling the vacancies before an angel swooped in and saved them.

I found myself downtown this week. "Found" being a disingenuous term for my guilty pilgrimage to Brooklyn's own ShakeShack, which besides staying delicious, stands as in this era as an appropriate if unofficial greeter to the western edge of Fulton Street and the Downtown Brooklyn shopping area.

Travel home by chilly bike (I'm a blogger remember) I came across many freshly vacant lots, (which I've learned from Brownstowner are owned by Steiner Development and slated to be discount hotels) some already deep in the throws of new residential construction. There wasn't much time for me to take in the flurry of new before I can across this lonely outpost.

I also found this sate-photo I've highlighted to be pretty hilarious as you can see where the lonely soldier stands in regard to the development.

This gritty little building shares the block with the mega development "The Hub" as reported on Gothamist (seen below) which as shown in this rendering will not only be a major real estate development but the new largest tower in Brooklyn (It'll be 52 stories) will push the borough's vertical profile further to the stratosphere.

That of course means it'll become a commercial destination. With BAM, "The Theater for a New Audience" on Rockwell as well as the high-rise residential tower 66 Rockwell all one block away it's guaranteed to be a hot spot. And that doesn't even include the Two-Trees mega BAM tower slated to go up across the northern nub of 3rd Avenue and Flatbush, which would add another cultural center, replacement library (there's debate about whether it's a replacement library or not) and residential tower. This area now has potential to be a consistently vibrant and enriching center in the way it hasnt been since the 50's when it was just around the corner from rows of Brooklyn's theater district. All of this development no doubt benefiting from tax exemptions, and the market cultivated by buildings like "Be" and the Barclay Center just (technically) three blocks away.

Personally I'm curious to know how all all this will embrace the African Street Fair that has been part of BAM's spring Dance Africa event for over a decade. Since the Two-Tree's project is aimed at the footprint of the street festival, it would make sense to me that some sort of connective supporting relationship be made.

Other than concern for Dance Africa and the annual street festival, I got no gripes about all this mind you. I don't want massive condos towering over and killing classic city and neighborhood sight-lines in Prospect or Crown Heights and the like, but this is Downtown, it's were massive projects should be. Hopefully since so many are residential the city has plans in the works to address the reality of the thousands new people who will be using nearly century old infrastructure in that area, and new school with all those some of the cash from all those new tax payers would be good too.

Vaguely I recall seeing a few residents on Schermerhorn and my guess (+mischieveous hope) is at some point in the down and out 70's or 80's a resident bought this building, thus ensuring a place in the glistening tomorrows to come. Of course it could be that some speculator came along at the right moment and there's nothing romantic about this building, but eh, in a life less ordinary, I'll vote for the romance.

So maybe it's good if there's a hold out relic from the past sticking up like a thumb against the new. Judging from the generic glass-rectangle-rific architectural design of many of these new projects it might be the easiest way for new comers to see what character looks like.

Photo Wednesday 012212 Edition : Snow Day

Yesterday's snow ensured another week of kids sledding, diy sidewalk navigation and our friends on facebook grousing about winter. Eh whaddaya gonna do? The fact that we've had about 7 total inches of snow the last two years has helped collectively toughen us to winter so we'll all just have to summon our inner Yukon explorer, or pretend to at least.

Today's photo for wednesday comes from the winter scape that is Bedford Avenue & Sterling Place and the majestic Studebaker Building.

Be safe out there.

Winter Bridge to Brooklyn : Photo Wednesday 02/16/11

This photo feels as variously hemmed and boxed in as in S.A.D. feburary can. I think its fitting.

Sweeten the winter: Beny's Delice : Photo Wednesday 02/09/11

Beny's

Just barely made this PhotoWednesday... so much to do...

anywhoo... Last few weeks have found my rummaging through me old stomping grounds, Clinton Hill,(Fort Greene! Bed-Stuy!) And along the way I wandered into a delightful display of delicious decadence distracted me and I was a decidedly directed into the den of desserts that is Beny's Delice.

The pictures are more demonstrative:

Beny's Delights

I got the cheese cake on a bead of short bread, very yummy. and a banana chocolate tart of some sort.
Both are on the top shelf (natch') and toward the right side

Wallpaper
The interior is very rustic in a cutesy folk meets french cosmo kinda way. I liked the wall paper so much I'm thinking of using it for my laptop...they should put it on their website...or does noone do desktop-wallpapers anymore?

Interior

Staff quite nice, attentive and appropriately proud.

Apparently they've been open since last summer 2010, to think I used to live around the corner from the view above, what else is going on in my neighborhood since I've been gone? Suggests?

Atlantic Yards Update: Photo Wednesday 02/02/11

Oh yeah the Hot Bird Building has come down

IMG_3909

In lieu of the Atlantic Yards boondoggle more of the properties in it's clutches are going the way of the opposition. I was headed down Vanderbilt when I saw this building in mid-destruction and I don't think its over the top to say it looked ripped open and violated.

IMG_3913

And at the actual construction site,

the stakes are in the heart, struts are in the ground for the Nets' soon to be arena. If you listen closely you can already hear the sound of losing...

Snowstorm Slideshow So far...

"Mila Kunis is bored" in Williamsburg

Recently I needed to engorge on copious amounts of succulent BBQ beef & pork as well as potent liquor, all tenderly prepared and unceremoniously presented (wax paper! recycled mason jars!!) so of course I headed over to my fave Bk BBQ spot, Williamsburg's own Fette Sau (which we all know means "Fat Pig" in German, right? no? well there it is then).

To get my hands clean and ready for the tender rendering of yummy morsels, I headed to the lavatory and while washing my hands, my eyes spotted a provocative communique just above the familiar call for employees to wash their own.

IMG_3943

In WillyB armed with my Hipstermatic App in my iPhone and I hyperactive imagination, how could I not click away.

IMG_3949
It's funny to image the real Mila Kunis, being dragged out to dine at Fette sold on the idea by Hipster Zealots on an obsessive pilgrimage for all things authentic. So many evocative considerations came to mind as a result of that little tag, I figured the best way to go is sharing and letting you decide how the Mila Text should be read. Is it:

Critical review? Statement of wellness? Award show fatigue? or projected result of what happens when you don't keep a celebrity interested?

Of course there's always the chance that Black Swan Mila Kunis was the source of the writing, for all i know she might have been in Fette Sau, sampling choice cuts of meat, or even in Brooklyn or possibly bored. How can we be sure??? Mila?

Chained to this Winter - Snowstorm Part V

Chains, originally uploaded by b'klynborn.
This shot is from the Dec blizzard, those chains didnt do much, and judging by the silence I heard last night, theres gonna be tough haul for sanitation and the rest of us today.

The pic above shows how little use those chains can be against serious accumulations.
IMG_3762
At last count nearly a foot of snow has fallen on the city in the past 36 hours. I gotta think that somewhere, probably in one of the major city parks, there's gotta be at least 3 feet of snow standing.

Bundled in Bushwich Brooklyn : Photo Wednesday 01/19/11

Bundled in Bushwich Brooklyn, originally uploaded by b'klynborn.
Bushwich is the only section in Brooklyn that I have knowledge of and yet have no interest in going to. It's not that I don't generally enjoy Bushwich, I've had good (and random) times there, and it's not the people or the culture, it's the blocks. The streets of Bushwich themselves drive me up and wall and down again. The paucity of right angles throughout the avenues of Bushwich is more than I can generally abide. Despite that I went on a little mission this weekend and took a variety of shots, some familiar some unexpected. I'll get into all that in another post, but for now, this pic makes this week's Photo Wednesday.

PS: I really like the kid's aura.

Photo Wednesday 03/17/10 : Missed it by that much Edition

Well I made a commitment to have a new photo up every week and I just watched as a 404error allowed the last grains of this Wednesday pass through the hour glass. Brings me back to last week's thought about deadlines.

But speaking of things missed, spring is on the march as evidenced by today's Bonny Bright St. Patrick's Day and all the bonny suburban lasses I saw in midtown...

So I guess in keeping with the thought of "missing" here's somethings we may not see again for some time...

Photo Wednesday 01/06/10 : 1st look back Edition

End of a year, end of a decade, honestly I didn't even realize the latter until two weeks ago. Around that time it snowed. Since everyone still seems to be in the mindstate of looking back where we've been I thought these two photos were appropriate for today's "Photo Wednesday". I didn't intend the contrast when I took the second photo, but I did feel the sense of deja vu as I gloved back up and walked away from the snowy Fort Greene Park scene.

Winter in Ft Greene Park
It's almost the same spot albeit closer in the winter scene, but yup, same hill.

Ten years seems like near and far to me. Do we really need to look so far back to find significance? How far removed must we be to see clearly. I look forward to finding out.

Photo Wednesday 2/25/09 Of Warmer Days...

It's been so damned cold out. But have you noticed? The days are getting longer and this is the last Photo Wednesday in Feb 09. To get us through the moment I thought a look back to brighter, sunnier, warmer days would help set our minds on a bright, sunnier, warmer future. Here's some pics I shot in Summer past when T-Shirts (and even no shirts) ruled.

The email mentioned other potential coolness privy only to those you show up, and that includes a possibility for naked art (they're making the art, you're invited to be naked). Sounds like surprises for all!

I don't actually know the organizers (Gelato), this info came to the magical mystical BrooklynBorn mailbox, I do happen to know one of the artists,(that would be Ron Jean Gilles who's jewelry and friendship I've appreciated since the time we were artists at Chashama) although I was unaware he's down with this. Hope to see you there (right after the Giants stomp Phillyon nobody actually), dress warm, it's still brick out.

Happy New Year 2009, to Brooklynites and the world

I rang in the New at a combination of friend's living rooms, cozy local pubs, and one occasionally pretentious mini-night club, all in Brooklyn of course. (apologies to my friends who partied in Astoria) I wanted to go but that wind wass wicked, kept blowing me right up out the subway station. And have you ever walked through Astoria on a windy winter night, jeez you might as well be naked, wet and flayed.

No pictures, not for nothing but who wants to see dark blurry images from Moe's? Or video of someone's dvr'd broadcast of a network feed from Times Square? Nope what I have is best wishes to everyone who reads this, and especially everyone who commented on this blog in last year, my first year blogging.

I got plans (who doesn't?) for this year's blog which I'll be detailing probably sunday.

In the meantime as I watch the sun rise and the buildings' molten glare for the first time in 2009's Brooklyn I remember a lovely young lady from a far away place telling me long ago that one should always see the new year sun to properly greet the year and set the tone for things to come.

Admittedly when she said that I thought of how many times I had failed to see the first day much less the first daylight of the year and wondered if I'd been doing it wrong in all my prior years, you know being blatto and what-not. But seeing as I'm awake and staring directly into 2009, remembering her optimistic words help warm an otherwise cold morn.

(as you know I'm big on images so I took this one
but since my camera is still broke from the spill this
is what I got. The pic seems perfect considering...)

The obligatory snowfall post

IMG_8110
Here's an outsidah' brooklyn post made more interesting since when I entered the subway in Bk there was no snow on the ground and when I exited, I beheld the scene above.

IMG_8104
I've been trekkin out to 23rd street recently, for reasons reason obvious to fans of discount dentistry, to begin the next major urban renewal project, my bridgework.
IMG_8117
The pics are from Madison Square Park and since I know you know (and I'm too lazy to research) what are those treehouses all about?
IMG_8120
IMG_8116

Anyway I took these, as testament to the beautiful of fresh snow and to proclaim that while I have close to no idea what a picture my camera takes will look like (since the spill to concrete it suffered) it does in fact take pictures. The element of the unknown is kind of cool in a retro-("ohmygawd did i get it??", "did i get it?!?!?)annoying sort of way. It's basically like taking pics with an old 110 point and shoot. wow. that's the sound of me dating myself.

1st B'klyn Snow 08/09 season

1st Bklyn Snow 08/09 season
One hit? I wonder...

Ah... I love nature's ability to read our minds and translate our thoughts into weather events, don't you? The way it rains incessantly when your team loses the championship or the gentle rainbow arching across the sky after a funeral. Or do I have those reversed?

Whatever. As I was about to write a post 'xplaing how much last night's 1st snow is nothing but a memory, wacky moms-nature decided to shake more snow in front of me than at a south beach coffee table, even more snow than this;

An how about that, as I finished that paragraph so have the snow flurries stopped. "licky boom boom" indeed, whatever that means.

And without further delay here's last night's first snow pics:

Photo Wednesday 12/03/08 Chilly Willy the Pigeon

Here's a late PhotoWednesday edition: Winter soon come.
Hunkerdown

I've noticed this dude(or dudette) a few times over past weeks. I'm back from the dentist and the razor blades of joy that are dental x-ray films. There used to be some cushioned tabs the dentists would use to soften the edges of those films, so they wouldn't make dog food scraps out of the lining of my mouth. That they don't any more means somebody choked on one and spit out a trust-fund.

Anyway, between the razor x-rays and the razor's edge that is my life these days I got to experience the chill in the air. It's nothing like February will be of course, and I still hold out hope of a globally warmed christmas-time, but seeing the above pigeon puff itself up and try to bask in the days last rays of sun turned my cold clumpy heart into something slightly less cold and clumpy.

Even now as I write this the boid is still out there, the sun now gone, it's body bracing against the breeze. Winter soon come.
