Photo Wednesday 020514 : Bridge to SnowWhere Edition

And the snow goes on...

This Photo for Wednesday obviously comes from this week's snow storms. Love this pic, I was on my way to an errand when I decided to hop off the subway and take the bridge. Stinging snow, obscured city, frames hands, icy camera. Good times! It got so dark the lights came on, it's actually about 12:35pm in this pic.

In addition to the new snow falling today, supposedly more snow's on the way this weekend. I blame the groundhog for being mad that the Mayor dropped him. Stay safe.

Photo Wednesday 012212 Edition : Snow Day

Yesterday's snow ensured another week of kids sledding, diy sidewalk navigation and our friends on facebook grousing about winter. Eh whaddaya gonna do? The fact that we've had about 7 total inches of snow the last two years has helped collectively toughen us to winter so we'll all just have to summon our inner Yukon explorer, or pretend to at least.

Today's photo for wednesday comes from the winter scape that is Bedford Avenue & Sterling Place and the majestic Studebaker Building.

1st Snow of 2014

I was scoffing all night this snow storm. 6 inches of snow? Closed schools? C'mon… I said. I walked through 26 inches of snow to get to the 7th grade I said. Well I was wrong. If you've gone out in it you know it's not the snow, its the air temps which are hovering around 0º. If you're  hyper-active kid you might be okay but otherwise don't be outside long.

Chained to this Winter - Snowstorm Part V

This shot is from the Dec blizzard, those chains didnt do much, and judging by the silence I heard last night, theres gonna be tough haul for sanitation and the rest of us today.

The pic above shows how little use those chains can be against serious accumulations.

At last count nearly a foot of snow has fallen on the city in the past 36 hours. I gotta think that somewhere, probably in one of the major city parks, there's gotta be at least 3 feet of snow standing.

Photo Wednesday 02/09/10 : Snow Job Edition

As the flakes of NYC Blizzard 2,10 start to fall... the sign seems to be saying something....

Canceling school. A day early. Mannnnnnnn..... the Mayor must be missing my rants.

But I won't give in to the Mayor or anyone else. (I'm not your MONKEY!)

Nope.

But I will say the idea of school closures in New York City, shock and annoy me. Instantly I can't help but question the toughness of today's kids, and my peers, their parents. My sole anecdotal utterance would be that I once walked to school in nearly two feet of snow two miles and in two hours time. True story. If the city didn't closed the schools, I had to go to school. So I went. During that trek the swirling snow and I were the only things moving. When I finally got to school, I was one of about 37 students who showed up. We sat in the auditorium watching 16millimeter Bullwinkle films. I never liked Bullwinkle.

I found this in the NY Times coverage of the school canceling decision:

"On Jan. 8, 1996, officials closed schools as a huge northeaster approached, and kept them closed for two days under a blanket of 20 inches. It was the first time since 1978 that a snow day had been declared the previous day."

And just like that the light came on. Within that period fits my entire Public School existence. All those mornings listening to the radio, watching the news waiting for my school's name to be called as closed. It never happened. No matter how bad, I never got a snowday off. Just left out in the cold.

Here's an outsidah' brooklyn post made more interesting since when I entered the subway in Bk there was no snow on the ground and when I exited, I beheld the scene above.


I've been trekkin out to 23rd street recently, for reasons reason obvious to fans of discount dentistry, to begin the next major urban renewal project, my bridgework.

The pics are from Madison Square Park and since I know you know (and I'm too lazy to research) what are those treehouses all about?



Anyway I took these, as testament to the beautiful of fresh snow and to proclaim that while I have close to no idea what a picture my camera takes will look like (since the spill to concrete it suffered) it does in fact take pictures. The element of the unknown is kind of cool in a retro-("ohmygawd did i get it??", "did i get it?!?!?)annoying sort of way. It's basically like taking pics with an old 110 point and shoot. wow. that's the sound of me dating myself.
